RUBA's PIR

From now on you can order caps from our own industrial waste!

In Switzerland about one million tons of plastic are consumed annually, which equates to 125 kilograms per person . (Source: Federal Office for the Environment CH 2022). About two-thirds are burned, which leads to air pollution in the form of CO2 emissions. We want also actively participate by reduction of plastic waste and support the ambitious goals of the Packaging law and the Plastic packaging industry.

No manufacturer can achieve "Zero Waste" production because any form of production automatically involves waste. This waste is generated during processes like coloring, starting of machines or process optimization. However, if such production remnants are properly separated and sorted, almost 100% of them can be recycled or reused.

A regulated and environmentally conscious disposal of waste we have practiced for decades. At that time, the remnants were ground up and could be returned to the natural general plastic recycling process. In the meantime, we've optimized various internal processes in order to use the waste more efficiently. Now the caps are collected in large octabins and are regularly picked up by a recycling company. They grind and regranulate them with RUBA standard black masterbatch, which we supply. This process results in a high-quality regranulate that is returned to us.

This is how in-house PIR - Post Industrial Recycled Granules is produced.

The quality of our PIR was one of the major challenges. We tested mat caps diameter 25mm from the Softline Standard line and ribbed caps diameter 40mm from the Standard Classic line. Already after the first material test, the desired quality was achieved and approved.

Our PIR regranulate can be effectively used as an environmentally friendly alternative for black parts. Since glossy surfaces are generally more sensitive, we recommend ordering caps in black and mat design. Since glossy surfaces are generally more sensitive, we recommend ordering caps in black and mat design. With this combination, there is hardly to find any visual difference between caps produced with virgin and PIR resin. Even the material-properties are very similar.

What is the difference between PCR and PIR? You can find the explanation in our Flyer.
